Public Hospital Authority says interns reached the end of their one-year internship which is a requirement for engagement in the public hospital

Although the Public Hospital Authority clarified that the 30 intern doctors have reached the end of their one year internship, Davis called it a “firing” and said it was “stupid and immoral and the government needs to reverse that decision immediately,” as doctors are needed on the front line of the pandemic, he said.

Davis said questions like “how could you fire doctors during a health emergency, when you should be reinforcing our frontlines instead?” need to be answered by Prime Minister Hubert Minnis, who serves as acting minister of health.

PHA said the one-year internship period commenced by the interns on July 1st, 2019 and ended on June 30th adding that the one-year internship arrangement is a requirement for licensure.

President of the Doctor’s Union Melisande Bassett in a press statement summed it up as a “job loss” and said “it is incomprehensible that the goodwill and sacrifice of so many front line physicians could be rewarded with such avarice and apathy. These actions are a travesty…”
