Resident of Russell Island Clay Sweeting says the bridge is essential for commute and business
Opposition Senator Clay Sweeting responding to a bridge that collapsed today in North Eleuthera, connecting Spanish Wells to Russell Island.
Sweeting said the bridge has been a matter of concern for some time and had been contracted for upgrade and replacement.
He said the contract was signed in July 2019 and the new bridge is in containers on Russell Island waiting to be installed. “I would recommend that the government work with haste to replace the bridge and ensure that the residents of this community once again have safe potable water,” he said. Sweeting noted that the water main, that was attached to the bridge and serviced the community on Russell Island, was also destroyed.
He said the residents are now without potable water and commute from Spanish Wells to Russell Island has halted. No one was injured in the collapse.
