The 8-year-old boy who died after he was found hanging was described as “intelligent and high-spirited.”

He was identified as Mariano Chery, a student of T.G Glover Primary School, a third grader.

According to police, Mariano was discovered by his brother, hanging from a security bar in his home on St Alban’s Drive.

Schools were initially closed for two days due to the effects of Hurricane Milton, but the Ministry of Education made a prompt decision to reopen schools on Thursday instead of Friday due to improved conditions.

Mariano was at home around 10am when he was discovered with a belt around his neck.

The school said in a statement that Mariano had a special interest in reading and learning. “His prospects of success were indeed promising.”

A woman believed to be his mother was seen overwhelmed with grief as she cried aloud.

Other children aware of what occurred, were led away from the scene.

After being alerted to the incident, the boy’s father accompanied him to the hospital but the boy died some time later.

Minister of Education Glenys Hanna-Martin gave her condolences to Mariano’s family.

It is still not known if the child intentionally caused harm to himself. Police are conducting an investigation.
