Congratulations poured in after Miss Bahamas Chantel O’Brian made it to the top ten in the Miss Universe Pageant on Sunday evening.

O’Brian was among the top ten contestants at the 70th edition of the pageant in Eilat, Isreal where Miss India Harnaaz Sandhu was crowned the winner of the beauty competition.

A confident O’Brian was selected from a group of sixteen women. She strutted the runway in a two piece, white swim suit, with a leopard print cover while adorning a pixie hairstyle.

Though O’Brian did not win, her evening gown and national costume bedazzled judges and supporters.

On Saturday, O’Brian was awarded the ‘Spirit of Carnival Award’ sponsored by Carnival Cruise Line. The company says she embodies its values of “fun, friendship, diversity and inclusion.”

Prime Minister Philip Davis took to Twitter to express his pride in her achievements.

Opposition Leader Michael Pintard also expressed delight in her accomplishments.

Other Bahamians also took to Facebook to congratulate O’Brian.

Why it matters

Miss Bahamas Universe are rarely successful at the international pageant. The organization has often changed hands and has faced scrutiny for not properly preparing candidates for the world stage.

This is the first time, a Miss Bahamas contestant has placed in the top 10.

In 2001, Nikera Simms was awarded the Miss Congeniality title.
