In the wake of another murder linked to a $1.5 million heist, FNM Leader Michael Pintard has criticized the government for its perceived inaction regarding the investigation into corruption allegations within the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
“The Davis administration is silent as a mouse as public scrutiny intensifies,” Pintard said.
The big story
Oral Roberts, a suspect in the Odyssey Airport robbery, was killed on Tuesday afternoon, marking the third suspect’s death since the November 2023 incident.
Michael Fox Jr and Dino Smith were the other two men killed in May and January.
A viral spread of audio recordings regarding payments between police, a lawyer, and one of these suspects in the heist, instigated a police corruption inquiry, with the commissioner of police announcing an investigation by its Security and Intelligence Branch.
Why it matters
Trust in the police force has been further eroded as a result of the audio recordings and Robert’s death, adds more fuel to the fire, intensifying public scrutiny and distrust.
What he’s saying
Pintard said, “This murder once again puts law enforcement and the criminal justice system in the spotlight for the wrong reasons, renewing public accusations of systemic corruption among those tasked with enforcing the law.
“Witnesses and bystanders have made startling allegations that this latest murder may be connected to an incident at the center of an ongoing investigation into corruption within the RBPF and beyond.
“The government’s lack of urgency and engagement in establishing a transparent process to investigate this matter is shaking public confidence in law enforcement, policymakers, and the entire criminal justice system.
“Three suspects in a major crime have died violently, but the Davis administration is silent as a mouse as public scrutiny intensifies.
“Will the minister of national security and the prime minister acknowledge the worsening erosion of the public’s trust?
“How many more will die in our streets before our elected government demonstrates a sense of urgency?”
State of play
The Security and Intelligence Branch of the police force is investigating the matter and at last announcement, the law enforcement organisation sought assistance from the United Kingdom’s Metropolitan Police.
