Philip Davis says other ministries authorized the entrance of Bahamian residents with test kits
Opposition Leader Philip Davis called on other ministers involved in the test kit flight fiasco to explain the role they played in the much talked about debacle.
Speaking at the Progressive Liberal Party’s Headquarters on Tuesday, the opposition leader said he has questions that need answers as other ministers assisted Dr. Sands in “breaching protocol.”
“We believe that there are other ministers who have to explain or account for what happened in this matter.
“The persons who entered had to get the permission of the civil aviation authority, the immigration department and the customs department.
“The ministers of immigration, aviation, and finance have explanation to give to the country for their conduct or for the conduct of their departments,” he said.
Davis said his party welcomes the Prime Minister’s acceptance of Health Minister Duane Sands’ resignation.
Davis calls the resignation long overdue and said it should be a lesson that no one is above the law.
Davis added that the Attorney General Carl Bethel must say whether or not the criminal law was broken in these circumstances and what is to ensue if the laws were broken.
Dr. Sands tendered his resignation from cabinet on Monday.
On Sunday, Dr. Minnis conceded that Dr. Sands “breached protocol” when 2500 COVID-19 test kits were brought into the country with an American couple who has Bahamian residency status.
It was later revealed that 6 people were on the private plane that was allowed through the border during the national shut down.
On Monday evening, Dr. Sands said he accepted responsibility for the breach of protocol and acknowledged that he acted outside of the scope of his authority.
He said his actions were guided by a great desire to obtain the much-needed testing swabs which are in short supply globally
