What happens if Brian Rolle (COI) wins the Golden Isles by-election?

With the Golden Isles by-election ten days away, some have their eyes trained on the Coalition of Independents (COI), a party that has built a strong online presence but has yet to secure a seat in Parliament.
If the COI’s candidate, Brian Rolle captures Golden Isles, it would be one of the most significant political shifts in the Bahamas.

Here’s what would happen:

1. A milestone moment for the COI

A win would mark the first time the COI holds an elected seat in the House of Assembly. Known as a fringe party, it would move the party into the center of legislative debates.
For a movement that began as an advocacy group and has rallied thousands of disgruntled supporters through social media and public criticism of both major parties—the FNM and the PLP —stepping into Parliament would be a major milestone.

2. Pressure on the PLP and FNM

The FNM and the PLP would have to reconsider their political strategies and rebuild heading into the general election. Both parties would be forced to respond to the growing appetite for third-party voices, which is a call for ‘change’. It is a reflection of voters’ frustration with traditional politics or a desire for new leadership.

3. No change in House control

The PLP would still control the government, and one COI MP would not change the balance of power. But it could cause the tone inside Parliament to shift. The COI has built its brand on fiery criticism and disruption. Bringing that style into the House could change the dynamics of debates.

4. A test of COI’s credibility

People will watch to see if the party can hold the seat. Voters will expect concrete results like constituency work, strong presence, and meaningful contributions in Parliament.
The by-election could become the litmus test that determines whether the COI evolves into a long-term political party or remains a protest party.
