Friends, family, and fellow Toastmasters are mourning the death of Derek Rolle, a respected mentor who was shot and killed late Thursday night on Cambridge Drive.
Rolle’s passing leaves a deep void in the Toastmasters community and among those he mentored across the organization. His colleagues say his influence and warmth will be remembered.

“Derek was a mentor, a friend, and a true pillar of strength for so many,” said Ancin Munnings, District 47 Director. “His dedication was immeasurable, and his presence was a gift to us all. His leadership was marked by unwavering passion for Toastmasters’ mission and genuine care for every member and club he guided.”
Police said Rolle had just exited a residence around 11 p.m. when gunmen in a Japanese vehicle opened fire in his direction before fleeing the scene.
Investigators have not yet identified a motive for the shooting.
News of Rolle’s death sent shockwaves through the Toastmasters community, where he was known for his leadership and encouragement.
Fellow Toastmaster Frank Camille described Rolle as “an excellent leader and mentor,” saying, “You pushed me to the forefront and believed in me. You worked hard and were a great example to us all.”

Others shared heartfelt tributes on social media.
“The coolest person I know,” said friend Tino Smith.
Dr. Amanda Burrows said she knew him for a short period, but was inspired by his “strength, kindness, and spirit.”

His niece, Doll Chyna, wrote, “He was the greatest uncle a girl could have. I will miss you, Uncle. My heart is broken.”
